Mechanisms determining synaptic specificity and architecture

Position summary

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the lab of Dr. Michael Nonet in the Neuroscience Department at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis focused on the development of transformative molecular tools for the analysis of developing synapses in C. elegans. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop and apply molecular, genetic, and imaging tools to study mechanisms by which synaptic specificity and sub-cellular architecture are assembled and maintained.

Primary duties and responsibilities

Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor including (but not limited to):

1. Manages their own project, which should lead to a first author publication.

2. Develops expertise in transformative molecular tools for the analysis of developing synapses in C. elegans.

3. Develops proficiency in career skills, including writing, public speaking, networking, and critical evaluation of scientific literature.

4. Presents scientific work both inside and outside the University with excellent oral communication skills.

5. Assists with grant preparation and reporting.

6. Prepares and submits papers on research with excellent writing skills.

7. Designs research experiments.

8. Evaluates research findings and reports results.

9. Conscientious discharge of his/her research responsibilities.

10. Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.

11. Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.

12. Engages in open and timely discussion with his/her mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.

13. Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members, and members of the research group.

14. Adherence to all applicable University policies, procedures, and regulations. All data, research records and materials, and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.

Minimum education and experience

Qualified applicants are expected to hold a recent doctoral degree in the biological sciences, or experience working with C. elegans preferred, but not required. Highly competitive salary and benefits are available and will be commensurate with experience.
