Research

Over the past several decades, developments in imaging technologies have evolved microscopy from a collection of divergent techniques to a coherent set of workflows, allowing imaging across varying spatial and temporal scales. Novel approaches in sub-diffraction imaging continue to expand optical microscopy in the realm of nanoscopic analysis. Enhanced multiphoton methods have enabled deeper and faster imaging in awake behaving animals. Cutting edge tissue processing techniques, such as optical clearing and expansion microscopy, have allowed imaging of target proteins and cells through previously immeasurable volumes. Access to and efficient use of such tools, however, is often beyond the expertise and means of individual labs, and to these ends, the Washington University Center for Cellular Imaging (WUCCI) was founded in 2015 to serve as an imaging technology hub and resource to the WashU medical campus. The center offers access to cutting edge optical, electron, data analysis and cryogenic electron microscopy tools, comprehensive training and educational opportunities, a sample processing pipeline, and collaborative opportunities with experts in divergent imaging modalities.

With the expanded commitment by the School of Medicine in neurobiological research, and the construction of the Neuroscience Research Building (NRB), the WUCCI aims to expand its scope to the application of cutting edge optical modalities to assay neural systems and models of disease. As Assistant Director of the WUCCI, Dr. Bayguinov brings his interests and expertise in dynamic imaging, multiphoton microscopy, lightsheet fluorescence imaging, and tissue processing to the development and management of this new WUCCI-Neuroscience Facility in the NRB.
