In this seminar, I will describe two studies. The first is about the identification of neurons forming a central rhythm generator and their recurrent inhibitory synaptic connections as the key mechanism in rhythm generation. This is achieved using in vivo photo-tagged recording, functional manipulations, connectivity tracing and synaptic perturbation experiments. The second is about the identification of a central pain-suppression circuit that is activated by general anesthesia to prevent nociception without affecting conscious perception; and how we can use this circuit to reverse engineer a placebo effect.
